THE WEAPON SINGS BEFORE IT SHOOTS AGAIN

A collaboration between Food of War, Javier Núñez Gasco and Museo La Neomudéjar 

This performance emerges from the convergence of two artistic investigations:

Arma muerta (2015) by Javier Núñez Gasco — a hunting shotgun whose barrel has been transformed into a Renaissance flute, constructed to perform the funeral march from Gustav Mahler’s Titan Symphony.

Coto Vacío / Hollow Hunt (2025) by Food of War — a participatory inflatable installation developed during the Kárstica Artistic Residency, examining the logics of territorial appropriation linked to hunting grounds and the phenomenon known as “empty Spain”.

The performance articulates mourning as a symbolic redistribution of power.

The action draws inspiration from Moritz von Schwind’s engraving, in which the animals form the funeral procession of the dead hunter. Here, the weapon no longer fires. It breathes. It laments. It becomes an instrument of collective grief.

Between wind, memory and territory, the performance proposes a temporary inversion of violence: the hunted return, the landscape remembers and the weapon sings before it shoots again.
