MAMACOCA COCAMAMA

An immersive gastronomy experience

Food of War & Futuro Coca Festival – Winner of the Colombia–UK Co-creation Grant

Mamacoca Cocamama is a multisensory gastronomic ritual that reimagines the cultural narrative of the coca leaf. Conceived as part of the Futuro Coca Festival in Colombia and supported by the British Council’s Co-creation Grant, this immersive experience invites guests to engage with coca beyond its stigma — through taste, territory, and ancestral memory.

Blending traditional ingredients with contemporary culinary methods, the experience explores coca as a living archive of knowledge and connection. Each recipe becomes a bridge between the spiritual teachings of Indigenous peoples (our “elder siblings”) and urban or global audiences (the “younger siblings”), offering new meanings for a plant that has too often been misunderstood.

Gastronomic highlights included:

  • Cauce (Forest Brew): A citrusy infusion of torombolo, mandarin lemon, coca leaves, and organic panela.

  • Hermanos (Corn Bundle): A tamal made of corn and coca flour, filled with ancestral bean hummus.

  • Mamá Coca – Coca Mama (Leaf): A tribute to the sacred presence of the coca plant.

  • Isú (Paper): An edible coca paper carrying messages for reflection.

Through ritual, flavour, and collective storytelling, Mamacoca Cocamama offers a peaceful reclaiming of the coca leaf — honouring its spiritual, medicinal, and culinary legacy.
